Besiktas JK of Istanbul was the first traditional sports club to see the potential of Esports, and they’re set to make history again.

There’s no doubt the minds at Besiktas are visionaries. Based in Istanbul, the historic soccer club made history in early 2015 by becoming the first traditional sports club to make the leap into esports, and they started taking titles immediately in games like League of Legends.

The club is making history again by announcing their participation in the LPE, the first esports league dedicated exclusively to teams fielded by traditional sports clubs across a wide array of esports titles. Besiktas’ first announced team will compete in the mobile smash-hit Clash Royale.

“Although Besiktas is 105 years old, we’ve kept our vision up to date, so we do not take esports lightly. We were impressed by LPE’s vision, which elevates esports to traditional sports’ level. Beşiktaş has immense experience building infrastructure in sports and when we look at what we want to achieve, it seemed natural to collaborate with LPE.” said the team’s spokesperson.

Besiktas sees LPE season 1 as an opportunity to make history in more ways than one. By competing in a mobile title like Clash Royale, the team believes its making history, and the LPE agrees. The team points out that near-universal smartphone adoption has turned mobile gaming into a $50 billion a year industry, with major markets still growing. “128 million people play Clash Royale on a daily basis. We believe it is safe to say that the game is on very strong position to grow, generate more revenue and gain more players. It is fun, it does not take that much of your time and it is easy to play. We think Clash Royale proved themselves as a trendsetter and we hope to contribute to the ecosystem.” says the spokesperson.

Besiktas joins Real Sociedad and Tokyo Verdy in confirming their plans to play in the LPE’s first season and will be joined by several more before the League Draw in January.
